About this vaccine
Typhoid is caught from contaminated food and water. It is commonly recommended for travel to South Asia (including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka), much of Africa, and parts of South America.
Ask about it if you are:
Typhoid cover is often given at the same appointment as hepatitis A.
Schedule
One injection, ideally at least two weeks before you travel.
Boosters
Every three years if you keep travelling to areas where it is advised.
A sore, red arm is the most common effect. Some people get a mild headache or feel tired or slightly feverish for a day. Serious reactions are rare.
The vaccine does not protect against every cause of traveller's diarrhoea, so your pharmacist will also talk you through food and water precautions.
Report a suspected side effect to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk.
