Tetanus, Diphtheria & Polio vaccine

About this vaccine

Who needs it — Tetanus, Diphtheria & Polio

This single combined vaccine tops up three things you were vaccinated against as a child. It is advised for almost every destination if your last dose was more than ten years ago.

It is especially worth checking before you travel if:

  • you cannot remember your last tetanus booster
  • you are going somewhere with limited medical care
  • you will be hiking, cycling, working outdoors or around animals
  • you are going to a country where polio is still a risk, or plan a long stay

Bring any vaccination record you have and we will check what you are due.

Schedule and boosters

Schedule

One combined booster dose.

Boosters

Around every 10 years for travel, if you are still going to areas where it is advised.

What to expect

A sore or slightly swollen arm for a day or two is the usual effect, and a small firm lump can last a little longer. Some people feel tired or get a mild headache.

Tell your pharmacist if you have had a strong reaction to a tetanus booster before.

Report a suspected side effect to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk.

Vaccines are prescription only medicines. Suitability is assessed at your consultation — nothing is sold or supplied without it.
