MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella) vaccine

About this vaccine

Who needs it — MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella)

Measles spreads very easily and is circulating in the UK, Europe and many travel destinations. Two doses of MMR give strong, lasting protection.

It is worth checking your record if you:

  • were born after 1970 and are not sure you had two doses
  • are travelling anywhere with a current measles outbreak
  • are going to a crowded event, festival or pilgrimage
  • are a student, or working with children or in healthcare

Your GP record is the best source — bring what you have and we will check it with you.

Schedule and boosters

Schedule

Two doses at least one month apart if you have not had them.

Boosters

No booster is needed once you have had two doses.

What to expect

A sore arm is common. Some people get a mild fever or rash about a week to ten days later as the vaccine takes effect.

MMR is not given in pregnancy, and pregnancy should be avoided for a month after a dose.

Report a suspected side effect to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk.
