About this vaccine
Japanese encephalitis is spread by mosquitoes in rural parts of South and South-East Asia and the Far East — including Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, India, Nepal, the Philippines and China.
It is commonly considered if you are:
Short city-only trips usually do not need it — your pharmacist will look at your actual itinerary.
Schedule
Two doses 28 days apart, or a faster schedule for some adults.
Boosters
Usually considered 12–24 months later if you are still at risk.
A sore arm, headache, aching muscles or tiredness for a day or two are the usual effects.
The full course takes time, so book early. Mosquito bite avoidance still matters even after vaccination.
Report a suspected side effect to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk.
